Free radicals are unstable oxygen atom or reactive molecule with a "free" (unpaired) electron. Antioxidants are sometimes called "free radical scavengers” as they have the capability to prevent damage, stop further damage, as well as facilitate repair when damage has occurred.
Actually, much of the antioxidant power of fruits and vegetables comes not from the classic antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C & E but from natural protective compounds called phytochemicals. Anthocyanins are a group of phytochemicals, which are natural pigments that occur in plants, fruits and vegetables that give colour red, blue and purple to them. In laboratory studies, anthocyanins are proven to have the ability to inhibit growth of lung, colon and leukaemia cancer cells without affecting growth of healthy cells.
Berries are delicious gifts from nature, which give our diet a health punch because they result in positive health outcomes. Scientists measure the antioxidants capacity of fruits and vegetables with the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test, which shows that berries contain a higher amount of antioxidants than other fresh fruits. Furthermore, numerous studies on berries have shown that it is the most powerful disease-fighting foods available.
It is undeniable that prevention is always better than cure! In view of our unhealthy eating and lifestyle, we can’t simply say “no” to assistance from potent antioxidant supplement.
